A day in the life of … Lilian Bérillon

At Clos de Caille, preserving our plant heritage is one of our top priorities. The Mariotti family and our artisan winemakers work tirelessly every day to offer you fine wines that embody the unique character of our terroir. Today, this approach is based on expertise that combines tradition and innovation under the watchful eye of our oenologist, Matthieu Cosse.

AT THE HEART OF CLOS DE CAILLE, THE ART OF CULTIVATING EXCELLENCE

In accordance with meticulous cultivation practices, Our vineyard is managed using mass selection with the internationally renowned nurseryman. Lilian Bérillon.

Unlike cloning, this method strengthens the genetic diversity of our vineyard and the authenticity of our grape varieties by promoting the highest quality and most resilient vines.

DOMAINE CLOS DE CAILLE

HERITAGE & COMMITMENT TO PRODUCING EXCEPTIONAL WINES

Since our first vintage, our estate has always advocated a more environmentally friendly approach to viticulture. Thanks to sustainable practices and our organic certification, we control our impact on biodiversity by cultivating our vines without synthetic chemicals. From pruning to harvesting, our minimal intervention approach aims to preserve the natural balance of our land and revitalise its microbial life.

Our commitment to respecting the environment, the passion that drives us, and the heritage we protect are all assets that affirm the identity of our wines, whether red, rosé or white.

«Viticulture at Clos de Caille is a matter of passion and precision, where every detail is considered with the utmost care.»

MASS SELECTION: A GUARANTEE OF CHARACTER AND LONGEVITY

We are committed to promoting sustainable viticulture that respects the plant. Because a great wine is born in the vineyard and vinification merely reveals its potential, we have chosen to invest in the future by preserving the genetic diversity of our vines.

Mass selection involves selecting the finest vine plants from the best plots of land., to gradually create a «house vineyard». Of exceptional quality, these plants reflect the identity of the soils of the Clos de Caille. This technique allows us to sustain the production of our wines with a variety of flavours and aromas that express the uniqueness of our terroir.

«Alongside Lilian Bérillon, we guarantee the creation of a vineyard capable of ageing for a long time and offering you consistent quality wines of the utmost elegance » – Mathieu Mariotti

Preserving identity  of our plots enables us to achieve, in perfect harmony with nature, balanced and complex wines. This commitment is reflected in «Haute Couture» vintages marked by a unique personality and a freshness reminiscent of the microclimate we enjoy in 200 metres above sea level.

THE CLOS JOURNAL

Lilian Bérillon, an iconic figure and nurseryman who pioneered a new model for vine nurseries, is particularly committed to preserving the terroir and the environment.

Lilian Bérillon

The son and grandson of nursery owners in Vaucluse, he quickly became aware of the scale of health issues in vineyards and the impact of climate change. In 2007, he founded an environmentally friendly nursery model with a single credo: plant quality.

How did the meeting with the estate team come about?

It was Sophie Morgaut, founder of the Force4 press agency, who put us in touch in 2022. The collaboration began with the first vintage., and all indicators are already green. The Mariotti family has seized the importance of impeccable plants to guarantee the quality of wines. Planting a vineyard is like investing in property – their area of expertise: First, you need to build on solid foundations to ensure long-term sustainability.. And the foundations of a vineyard are its root system.

What were the first steps in your collaboration?

During our first meetings, We quickly realised the uniqueness of the terroirs, which were just waiting for one thing: to express themselves.. And I believe that the terroir will be able to express itself thanks to a diverse vine plant, A vine plant built to last for generations. Genetic diversity Berillon, as opposed to cloning or laboratory-created resistant varieties, is the hallmark of a plant that allows the terroir to express itself. For more than 20 years, we have been exploring the finest terroirs and the oldest plots in search of century-old vines, which are identified, observed over three years and then preserved before being reproduced and delivered to winegrowers motivated by «the taste of wine», such as those at Clos de Caille.

In your opinion, what is unique about our estate?

All winemakers want to produce great wines, but few give themselves the means to achieve this. At Clos de Caille, it's very different. Everything is done to ensure that the terroirs express themselves, So let time do its work and allow yourself to be impressed by this jewel of Provence. …
