Our vineyard, managed with meticulous care, follows massal selection practices in collaboration with world-renowned nurseryman Lilian Bérillon.

Unlike cloning, this technique enhances the genetic diversity of our vineyard and maintains the authenticity of our grape varieties by selecting the highest quality, most resilient vines.

Massal selection involves choosing the finest vine plants from our best parcels, gradually crafting a distinct “House Vineyard.” These exceptional plants embody the unique soils of Clos de Caille, allowing us to sustain the production of wines with a rich array of flavors and aromas that truly reflect our terroir.

Lilian Bérillon, an iconic figure and pioneer of a new model for vine nurseries, is deeply committed to preserving terroir and ecology.

Lilian Bérillon

As the son and grandson of nurserymen from Vaucluse, Bérillon became acutely aware of the vineyard’s health challenges and the impact of climate change early on. In 2007, he founded an environmentally conscious nursery model, driven by one guiding principle: the quality of the plant.

How did the collaboration with the Clos de Caille team come about?

It was Sophie Morgaut, founder of the PR agency Force4, who introduced us in 2022. The collaboration began with our first vintage, and every indicator is already positive. The Mariotti family understands the importance of flawless plant stock to ensure wine quality. Planting a vineyard, much like their primary field in real estate, requires solid foundations for lasting success. And the foundation of a vineyard is its root system.

What were the first steps of your collaboration?

In our initial meetings, we quickly sensed the unique potential of these terroirs, waiting to express themselves. I believe that terroir can truly reveal itself only through vine plants rich in genetic diversityplants designed to thrive for generations. Unlike clones or lab-engineered resistant varieties, the genetic diversity we cultivate at Bérillon is the hallmark of plants that empower terroir expression. For over 20 years, we’ve scouted exceptional vineyards, seeking out century-old vines. These are carefully observed for three years, preserved, then propagated for vineyards like Clos de Caille that are dedicated to “the taste of wine.”

In your view, what makes our estate unique?

Many winemakers aim to create exceptional wines, but few fully commit to the steps necessary to achieve this. At Clos de Caille, it’s a different story. Everything is in place to let the terroirs speak, so we allow time to do its work.
